The Protective Brother The Head of the Family Count Philippe is the head of the Chagny family. He is wealthy, aristocratic, and devoted to his younger brother Raoul. He disapproves of Raoul's infatuation with Christine Daae, seeing her as an opera singer beneath his station. The Confrontation After Raoul's shot in the night, Philippe confronts his brother. He tries to dissuade him from eloping with Christine. They argue, and Raoul leaves. Philippe is determined to prevent the marriage. The False Trail When Christine disappears, Philippe believes Raoul has taken her. He chases after the carriage he thinks is theirs, but it is a decoy. He returns to the Opera and searches the cellars, where he meets his death.

The Siren's Lure He reaches the lake. The siren's song draws him in. He leans over the water and is pulled under by Erik. He drowns. His body is later found on the bank. The Aftermath The official inquest rules it an accident. The Persian knows the truth: Erik killed him. The death of Philippe deepens the tragedy and adds to Raoul's guilt. The Chagny family is shattered.
